  1. Love your site! Keep up the great work!

  2. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to sort the "This Week's Expert Picks" tab by the standings for the overall picking season instead of by affiliation.

I have no experience with making sites like this so I have no idea how easy or hard that would be. Just a thought so that we can see the top 20 or so expert picks all lined up with each other.

Anyway, thanks so much for this site, it really shows the trends/favorites of experts nicely. You rock!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Spencer - It is possible for me to do that with a little extra work, if that is something people would prefer to see.

  4. What S.Scott was asking for was similar to what I had commented on before. I asked for the ability to sort or limit the experts. Ranking them by YTD win pct would be useful. I think that is what he was asking for there. This would be a cumulative rank instead of just based on what the top 5 experts last week picked this week. Thanks again for making my other 2 recommendations happen.. the performance of the networks against each other and also naming the consensus pick and you also created the top experts page. This site is coming along well. It is a little slow to load for me at first, but once it loads, it is good to go. Seems like others liked these changes!

  5. Shaun - nice work. Anyway to view historical picks by week? I like the last week option but want to see the Week 1 picks as well.

  7. Just found this site. Fantastic concept to provide a comparative leader board with the top expert picks from various media outlets.

Sure helps me when trying to decide which team to choose.

Thanks so much and keep up the good work.

  8. I really appreciate the effort to accumulate all the expert picks in one place. I literally happened upon your page by accident while visiting all the pages you accumulate last Sunday. Schweet. I just had a horrific day, my worst ever and came to review. I noticed Jaws, an expert whose opinion I value greatly, had a couple different picks on the ESPN page than he had on yours. I presume he changed them this morning or some such. Do you make allowances for last minute picks, within reason? Not knowing how you accumlate, but guessing you simply scrape, I am wondering if this is done more than just once per week to build the spreadsheet... Thanks again for all your efforts... :)

  9. I updated today at 4pm ET, unfortunately Jaws decided to change his Tampa and Dallas picks. All I can do is correct when it is pointed out, I encourage anyone who spots this to email me at NFLPickwatch@gmail.com with the info.

    1. Also, can you put a consensus line in the standings table? I am curious how the consensus pick would rank if it were an actual picker. I like having the consensus line separated out at the bottom in this table, but it would be cool if it were also listed in the standings table in the appropriate place.

    2. Yeah, Teamrankings is another good site, with a mix of computer modeling and human analysis for predictions. They're a worthy addition to this table.

  21. I love this site!

And I agree with an earlier poster - it would be great to have the Pickwatch Consensus picks as an entry in the main table so we can see how well the consensus would be doing overall. I say that because I believe the Pickwatch entry currently in there are your personal picks, right?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks for the feedback! Yeah the picks are - at the moment - my own opinion, although as we now have 3 contributors that may change soon.

I will get the consensus added to the overall and add it to historic data too. I am working on an 'archive' section too.

and call it 'Experts on Teams' or something like that. Team Experts? idk

  44. I would to see a who's hot and who's not of pickers. Basically I would like to see how a picker is moving from week to week, did they move up 3 spots this past week, have they been trending up over the past 3-4 weeks? Or are they falling? And have a trend of falling over the past 3-4 weeks.

    ReplyDelete

    1. ESPN's guys change their minds like everyone else. Their picks are locked in for a given game around kick off time for that game. But, I've noticed that their picks have changed before as well. Highly likely that they changed after they were picked up by Pickwatch.

      Delete
    2. Yeah that's the case. Part of the reason we allow the comments to roll (although pagination would be nice!) is that as ypu can see, some guys change their picks multiple times in the week. We try to get ipdated as soon as were aware but without stalking Jaws (and I've considered sending Pickwatch Phil out to do just that...) we'll always be an hour or two behind.

Thanks for the comments though, it helps keep us on our toes!

  50. So here I am discussing the pick situation again and I ask "does a picker's average reflect a non-pick" (see Adam Rank-week 9)...does that poor soul's average go down because he/she/it doesn't pick? And I answer... "well it shouldn't"...but the algorithm would be tougher to write, or the math would have to be done by hand....I wonder what Karnack the magnificent would say?....what say you-Shaun and Phil?

  59. Thanks for the wonderful service. Wish you guys had the ATS picks too...that would be awesome.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The problem we've had with ATS is that there really aren't enough 'national' experts. We need to do a bit of scouting for reliable and free experts who you guys can rely on, and who pick every game each week. If not we're probably going to have to assess them entirely on the few games they pick...

  69. Thanks Shawn for putting together this site. I've climbed 10 places in my office pool in just two weeks because of this site.
I always click the adverts to help you build support in those important corporate meetings with the "Pickwatch better half".
My improvement suggestion is to add a weighted-average consensus pick line after the standard one. The standard
consensus pick line means the 94th place opinion is considered to be just as accurate as the 1st place opinion. The
weighted-average math isn't too difficult. Instead of using 1 for each pick, use that person's percent-correct, and
instead of dividing by the total number of picks, divide by the sum of their percent-correct.

    John

PS I hope you don't use Facebook comments instead of these because I never log on to Facebook.

    1. Haha thanks John*. Glad to read from so many emails and comments that Pickwatch is helping out. I know that when I first founded the site, it was because this is the type of information you can actually use. Your idea is good, I'll certainly play around with it and see what we get. Unfortunately I have a huge list as long as my arm of new feature requests and with the playoff standings/tables needing to be ready in 3 weeks, it may be difficult to get them in. I'll certainly incorporate it next year at minimum though.

On the comments thing, those ads will pay for a new server and site architecture so we won't be tied to Blogger (or Facebook) next year as the comments are annoying and of course we want more functionality for you to be able to interact with the site. I always tell people that any new features will be the things we all want as fans. This isn't some corporate giant trying to squeeze money out of you, we're in it for the right reasons. That seems to resonate with a lot of people and so I see no reason to change the ethos!

      Shaun

    1. The problem is that in matchups such as the Ravens@Lions, Baldinger picks... nobody! I've re-watched the segment 2-3 times and he doesn't pick anyone. If you have a time in the broadcast when he makes a pick, I can add it in.

  73. Hopefully Week 16 will be better than week 15 was for The Prediction Machine.

    ReplyDelete
  74. One minor arithmetical observation… At 20:25 (London time) today, the 17th of December, Pickwatch shows Dave Richard getting 12 correct picks for a Week 15 % of 80.0. Now, the Thursday night game -- San Diego at Denver -- was, I thought, a Week 15 game. So it seems to me that Dave Richard's score should be 12/16 or 75%. It seems as though all of the percentages were computed using a total of 15 (not 16) games. Am I misreading something?

  85. Hello Shaun,

I know you have a long list of enhancement items for 2014, but I'd like to add one more. The ability to download the picks into a CSV file, so that the user could then import those picks into a spreadsheet would be quite useful.

Also just a question. Are you in London? I've noticed London mentioned several times in PickWatch.com. I thought the English liked their football played with a round ball instead of an oval one. And for those who few who do like American Football, the start times would seem to me to be rather inconvenient. The 13:00 EST game would fall into London's prime time, but what about all the other games? Are there really Brits sitting around in pubs at 03:00 GMT watching football? Just curious.

    1. Hello John some interesting stuff there.

First up I don't see any reason why we can't find a way to make them exportable in some way. I'll add it to the list of features we'll work on. Hopefully however, it would be made semi-redundant by the ability to sort tables, include only certain data etc as we intend next year. I'll go into more detail on the forum later (once it's fully set up) and you can ask more questions etc if needs be as I agree with most of our commenters that this thread is getting ridiculous.

As for the British thing, yeah I live in Britain (although some 350 miles from London) and yeah, it's massively inconvenient. You can't help what you fall in love with though, and I grew up with the NFL as a boy, it was never going to change being over here! It helps now having stuff like NFL Gamepass, which is the equivalent of the directv sunday ticket and means I can watch multiple games or watch MNF early on Tuesday morning before everyone is awake.

I was actually the NFL's social media ambassador to the UK at one point along with one of the PFF guys. I reserve the right to call out my ex-employers however, particularly when they seem intent on diluting the game as we know it... I think that's a discussion for the offseason!
